Services

 

 

Services for Children

  • assessment for enrolment
  • remedial therapeutic play groups
  • individual, non-directive play sessions to assist children to address specific problems
  • ongoing assessment of problems in interpersonal interaction and communication
  • activities and experiences to promote language development and interpersonal communication
  • training in pre-academic and academic skills, both cognitive and social
  • range of experiences found in an excellent nursery school
  • guided and supervised integration into mainstream educational programs
  • preparation for change in the foster placement or for adoption
  • referrals to other professionals (physical or occupational therapist, child psychiatrist, etc.)
  • cooperative work with other professionals (e.g. speech language pathologist, teacher, daycare staff, etc.)
  • Summer Friends Program - a recreational summer day camp experience for children enrolled at SCEP CENTRE during the regular school term staffed by trained and supervised post-secondary students

 

Services for Parents and Caregivers

  • guidance in parenting
  • support and respite
  • coordination of services when several agencies are involved
  • advice for parents/caregivers to help cope with repeated foster home placement or preparation for adoption
  • transportation of the child to and from the regular program as necessary
  • transportation of parents to and from parent meetings at SCEP CENTRE
  • referrals for further help and support (legal aide, counselling, etc.)

 

Services for the Community

  • training for over 1200 volunteers and practicants since the program began in 1968
  • information sessions, lectures and workshops (for parents, day care staff, etc.)
  • written and oral presentations to community and government task forces
  • professional papers
  • active participation in and support of United Way activities
  • participation on community boards focussed on early childhood and community development
  • community development, for example participation on community boards and committees
  • day care staff regularly ask SCEP CENTRE for help or make referrals to the program. This is an on-going result of a program SCEP CENTRE's Day Care Friends which was an innovative program offering apprenticeship style training and support to day care staff working with children who have special needs in the areas of behaviour and communication
